When Scott and Linda Smith took over the Seagrove property that was the former home of The Gourd Garden, they came bringing more than plants.
The newly spruced up property called Clay Gardens, Gifts & Blessings is now home to a wide variety of in-season flowers, herbs, plants, citrus trees, wreaths, and other greenery, but the selection doesn't stop there.
Holiday wreaths are available adorned or unadorned, with a selection of ribbons in various colors. Or choose door greenery in the shape of a cross.
Walk farther back on the lot and discover teak outdoor furniture for the patio or porch, torches, pottery and intriguing driftwood from around the world for decorating.
Take a step inside and find one of the most unique gift shops around. Candles, more greenery, dried flowers, bird baths and feeders, cards, whimsical cocktail napkins, gardening tools and supplies, bulbs, cider mixes, ceramic clay pots, and artwork by local artists.
Smith said the shop will deliver plants in the area, and if you're not sure what you need, they also offer landscape design services.
"We're a combination garden/nursery/landscape/gift destination," she said.
Smith's first job after moving to the area 10 years ago from Boston was working for Randy Harelson at The Gourd Garden. When Harelson sold the nursery a few years back, it operated under the name Eastern Lake Nursery.
"You have to reinvent yourself here," said Smith, who formerly worked in consulting, pharmaceutical management, and for an outdoor playground company on the administrative side. After leaving the Gourd Garden, she got her real estate license and worked for an air conditioning company.
Her husband's background is in electrical systems and he learned AutoCAD while doing nursery design landscape in Seaside, WaterColor, and at Sandestin.
The Smiths, along with Anna-Lisa Daniel purchased the property in January and opened Easter weekend. Daniel's background is in interior design.
"Anna-Lisa wanted a gift shop, so, we cleaned it up before opening and she lends her artistic eye to it," said Smith.
In the gift shop, some will notice many items have a spiritual bent — hence the blessing.
Located in the curve at Seagrove on 30A, Clay Gardens, Gifts & Blessings is open from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
