Once upon a time, an Atlanta couple decided to escape the concrete jungle and move to the beach. They purchased property to build a new home and rented a house just down the street for the week between Christmas and New Year's so family from Atlanta could come down and see where they were going to live.

The couple wanted to have a party for their visiting guests to meet the few friends on 30A they had met. They didn't know what festivities happened on 30A for New Year's Eve but decided to host their party on the night before to avoid any conflicts.

They asked their few new friends to invite all their friends who they thought the couple needed to get to know.

Tom and Dana Saffel ended up with about 40 people at that first party nine years ago, all of whom became dear friends, and most return to celebrate with them every year.

One of their guests at that first party came up with the name "New Year's Adam," since "Adam" came before "Eve."

"We thought it was a great name and adopted it for future parties (held on Dec. 30)," said Dana.

The Saffels moved into their new home around Thanksgiving of 2005 and hosted their second annual New Year's Adam party as an "open house" for their friends to see their new home.
