'ARTISTIC DIFFERENCES': Sax man leaves Jones & Co. after more than two decades together
An era spanning 21 years ended last week when popular local band Jones & Co. split with sax man Al Alvarado.
Alvarado attributed the split to “artistic differences.”
Known for walking and working the crowd while blowing his horn, Alvarado began playing with Cheryl and Denny Jones on Oct. 6, 1989 without a single rehearsal.
“It was like instinctively we knew each other,” said Alvarado.
Alvarado was in the military and stationed in the area.
“I always did gigs with bands everywhere I was stationed. Cheryl and Denny had started Jones & Co. and were playing a gig in Fort Walton. They invited me to join in on sax and I did, unrehearsed,” he said. “I am going to miss the music we made.”
As for future plans, Alvarado is now promoting himself through “Saxology, the Al Alvarado Project.”
“I will probably be doing some things by myself for a while before hooking up with another group. And when I do, it will be my group,” he said.
When reached for comment, Cheryl said she did not want to comment “without composing herself.”
Cheryl and Denny will continue playing gigs in the area as Jones & Co.
