Beaches to remain closed at least until Thursday
The South Walton Fire District is flying double red flags on all area beaches, closing the water to everyone but surfers.
Authorities cite high surf and strong rip currents as the reason for the closing and say current water conditions are "extremely hazardous."
SWFD said the beaches are expected to be closed until at least 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Those entering the water under a double red flag condition can be ticketed by law enforcement officers.
