How to keep cooling bills manageable
In a record-breaking heat wave during the worst recession in many years, keeping power bills under control is paramount for many.
Kathy Morrow, director of communication for CHELCO, said to keep power bills as low as can be expected in this heat, her first suggestion is to keep the AC set on 78 degrees when gone during the day.
Even when at home, leave the thermostat on 78 and use ceiling fans in rooms you are using.
"They don't cool the room, however, just you," she said.
"Don't cook when it's really hot; eat cold dinners, eat out, or use the grill. Keep shades, blinds and curtains drawn," added Morrow.
Shutting off the water heater during the day when no one is home is another energy saver, as a water heater will heat water all day.
Gary Kemper, owner of Affordable Heating & Cooling, keeping your cooling system at peak performance will also help keep bills at their lowest.
Keeping air filters and coils clean is of the utmost importance, he said.
Kemper recommended servicing of the AC unit by a professional once a year, making sure there is adequate insulation and Freon, and using a programmable thermostat.
