Heavy machinery was razing an old Shell gas station to later raise a bargain chain store in Miramar Beach.

“That’s a redevelopment project,” said Walton County’s Interim Planning Manager Matt Carpenter. He said the former service station will be replaced by “a freestanding retail store.”

A Dollar General will replace the now-empty Shell Station at 10247 U.S. Highway 98 W. at the head of Sandtrap Road.

The store will not be a competing franchise with the existing Dollar General next to Winn Dixie. Rather, the existing store across from Silver Sands will relocate the less-than-half mile to the new site.

The Shell station, according to Carpenter, closed its doors and turned off the pumps this past spring, before a Georgia-based LLC acquired the deed for the 1.112-acre parcel at $1 million.

“I want to say it closed sometime either earlier this year, or late last year,” said Carpenter. “It closed coinciding with the acquisition of that parcel.”
