Bertha says bye-bye ... for now
Hurricane Bertha quickly lost strength this morning, a pattern that continued through the day.
On Monday, Bertha went from a tropical storm to a "major" category 3 storm within a few short hours.
"Bertha's rapid Intensification yesterday has been equaled by its rapid weakening today," said National Hurricane Center forecaster Rhome in his 5 p.m. EDT discussion.
It is expected Bertha will continue to weaken in the "short-term" and then could regain some strength later in the week. However, the official forecast is "slight weakening in the short-term with little change thereafter."
The season's first hurricane continues to move northwesterly and is expected to gradually turn north over the next couple of days as a mid-level ridge over the western Atlantic weakens and is replaced by a weak trough.
These changes could make Bertha's actions beyond 72 hours erratic. People with interests in Bermuda should continue to monitor the system.
