DFS Council Meeting
DeFuniak Springs Kiwianian David King asked to once again use the Lakeyard on Saturday, May 3rd for the annual Take a Kid Fishing Day. The program has proven successful with 240 participants last year. King also asked for the police to cordon off the area where a local feed store will supply food to feed the fish. The area around the pier behind the Chautauqua Building will be closed to fishing two weeks before the event. If there is bad weather, the event will take place the following weekend. Council approved the request.
Christopher Mitchell with the Florida Chautauqua Center, thanked the council for helping with this year's event and asked to allow the Civil War Re-enactment camp next year. Council member Don Harrison noted how students enjoy the camp. Mitchell said next year's theme is a Journey Out of Africa and Jim Fowler will be back. Council approved the request.
Needing to make maps, DeFuniak Springs Public Works Director Bill Holloway asked to purchase a wide format printer. The item is in the budget and council approved. The council also approved election managers and a deputy clerk, approved the canvassing board and approved poll workers.
City manager Kim Kirby also asked for nominations to the Northwest Florida League of Cities nomination for board of directors. Don Harrison can not be on the board after serving as president and past-president, he has to take a year off. No one volunteered.
Council approved a work order with Peters Municipal Engineering for the spray field re-rating and approved URS Engineering for additional services at the airport. The work is needed following the GPS survey. Kirby said the money is in the budget and some is covered by the grant.
Council authorized a signature request from the Oakdale Apartments. They are applying for a tax credit and are doing some painting and light work.
Kirby noted volunteer opportunities at the upcoming history fair on April 5th at the Walton County Fair Grounds, the need to volunteer with Habitat For Humanity, and serving with the Council On Aging and Boys & Girls Club, now at 55 regular youth. J.B. Hillard said there will be a community appreciation day on April 15th at the Life Enrichment Senior Center, saying they are setting it up for use, at least on a temporary basis.
