Hibiscus House hosted a Potluck Beyond Oil Party where participants made personal pledges to move away from oil dependence.

Films, flags take on oil

Walton area residents are using film and flags to educate people about ways to lessen dependence on oil.

The Torchlight Series will kick off its season this week with a viewing of Josh Tickell’s FUEL Tuesday night at Alys Beach Amphitheatre.

Fuel alternative advocate and filmmaker Tickell, originally from Louisiana, is expected to fly in from Los Angeles to lead a discussion on fuel-alternative solutions and his more than a decade journey of making the film.

Eating local is a mainstay of the moving beyond oil movement, and two local organic businesses, Raw and Juicy Organic Juice Bar and Café and Twin Oaks Farm, will be presenting a series of documentaries promoting that idea in a separate event.

The series will be presented to support the notion that eating and living organically is necessary for the health of humans and the planet.

Reclaim Our America hosted a Beyond Oil Party last Sunday at Hibiscus House in Grayton Beach to launch the campaign.

After showing a Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill documentary recently produced by the Sierra Club and other short films about energy alternatives, the participants wrote a personal pledge about steps they will take to move beyond oil on the backs of flags.

The flags are still available and are on display at businesses along 30A and at Hibiscus House. You can make your pledge at Raw and Juicy Organic Juice Bar in Seaside or Hibiscus House in Grayton Beach. For more information on upcoming events call 850-687-3494.
