Donna Lewis's son, Jason, planned his wedding to be a grand beach destination event for Sept. 18, 2004. But Ivan refused to forever hold his peace.

Hurricane Ivan made landfall as a Cat 3 at Gulf Shores, Ala., on Sept. 16, and left South Walton reeling in its wake.

The wedding had to be rescheduled for Nov. 13. The morning of the big day, before saying their vows in front of family and friends, Lewis's son presented his mother with a sterling silver link bracelet with one heart charm on which was engraved the word "mom" on one side and the date Sept. 18, 2004, on the other.

Lewis was touched and she cherished the gift her son gave her on his intended wedding day. She never took it off and wore it every day.

"It was such a sentimental bracelet,” Lewis said. “I loved it so much.”

Five years later on Sept. 13, 2009, Lewis's daughter married at the beach in Seagrove. Following the wedding, Lewis and her husband took one last walk on the beach before heading home to Atlanta. Lewis didn't realize until later that the bracelet was no longer on her arm.

Aghast, the couple returned to the beach and searched for it to no avail.
