UPDATE: Bicyclist dies after hit by 3 vehicles
YOUNGSTOWN — Anthony Edward Cory Hinds worked his shift at the Hardee’s along U.S. 231 near Youngstown on Wednesday. When his shift ended, he pedaled away on his bike.
His colleagues at the restaurant never saw him again.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported Hinds, 21, was riding his bicycle in the outside lane of the highway traveling north at about 10:25 p.m. when he was struck and knocked to the pavement. Two other vehicles then ran over the fallen biker.
The incident happened south of Preacher Johns Road along U.S. 231, FHP reported. Few houses or businesses are visible from the area where the incident occurred.
Hinds was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel, according to FHP.
Adam Shoup, a manager at the Hardee’s where Hinds worked, said Thursday the mood at the restaurant was somber after hearing of Hinds’ passing.
“It is a tragedy,” Shoup said. “I’ve been doing grief counseling here today. He was a great guy.”
Penny Phillipp, whose son was a friend of Hinds, said Hinds was a “friendly person” who was well-liked.
“A lot of the kids up there (Hardee’s) knew him. They were all the same age,” Phillipp said.
Shoup said it was raining “pretty bad” when Hinds left Hardee’s after finishing his shift Wednesday night.
“He rode his bike to work a lot,” Shoup said.
Investigation continues
All three drivers immediately stopped after Hinds was struck.
Those involved in the crash are Thomas Allen Samuels, 36, of Fountain; Mayibuye Umojaha Aquil, 39, of Marianna; and Amber Mae Gee, 18, of Fountain.
FHP reports no charges have been filed at this point, but the investigation is continuing.
Facebook was filled with messages of condolence Thursday.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hinds family. R.I.P Anthony Hinds. U will be missed dearly!” wrote Lisa Granger on a Facebook page.
Donations for Hinds’ funeral can be dropped off at Roady’s truck stop Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 850-867-3352 and ask for Joe Donnelly.
