With features such as a $100,000-plus floor-to-ceiling aquarium, a theater with stadium seating and a 113-inch HD screen, eight private bedroom retreats and seven full baths, and a 50-foot by 90-foot resort style pool, it's no wonder HGTV's "Extreme Homes" paid a visit to Torretta of Waterford at Kelly Plantation.
"This home is very deserving of this honor and recognition," said broker John Paul Somers, whose company, John Paul Somers & Company, has the home listed for sale at $8.95 million. "This happens to be the finest waterfront estate Destin has to offer."
Recently filming over two days, crews from HGTV arrived from London to shoot extensive video footage and conduct interviews at the 4300 Breakwater Drive home for a future episode of "Extreme Homes."
The HGTV "Extreme Homes" website says, "The word 'extreme' means different things to different people, and to these homeowners it means pushing the envelope as far as possible. From construction to completion, take an up-close look at some of the world's most spectacular houses ever built."
Torretta features 31 heated and cooled rooms; an eight-car garage; climate-controlled doggie rooms; a swim-up grotto bar and eight-person hot tub; 410-feet of water frontage on the Choctawhatchee Bay; a private dock and boat slip; and a $500,000 audio/video/security smart-house technology system. Even the bathroom is ornate with a mosaic waterfall urinal.
While he has walked through the thoughtfully constructed and elegantly decorated rooms of Torretta many times, Somers told The Log that the film crew had quite the experience.
"This home was designed and constructed with a generational mindset," Somers said. "When the crews arrived from London for filming, they were overwhelmed."
Somers said he received a text message from the show's producer, which characterized the film crews' experience as "insane."
"That's really flattering because they see extreme homes all over the world," he said. "This is a presentation that is admired by the whole globe on HGTV and it has quite an audience."

And while the exposure of Torretta on HGTV is tremendous for the Kelly Plantation home, Somers said the cumulative effect of the home's appearance on national television would have a significant impact on the area as a whole.
"This was not only promoting Torretta, but it will promote Destin as well," he said. "It will encourage people to come visit the area, and when they do they will be hooked."
