Students in South Walton will likely have a new school in a few years.
The Walton County School Board approved the purchase of 33.75 acres of land this week after months of discussion.
The Forrest View, LLC. property is located along U.S. Highway 98 between
“That certainly is where our growth has been,” Superintendent Carlene Anderson said of the new location.
In addition to the $3.175 million purchase price, the board also agreed to spend up to $400,000 to help fund 1/3 of the cost of building a road beside the property.
While an exact plan for what type of school will be built on the property is still in the works, district leaders have suggested it will likely be an elementary school.
The Board began looking for property in South Walton after it became clear the district’s current facilities wouldn’t accommodate all the growth.
There were few options available that met minimum requirements, including at least 30 acres of useable land that wouldn’t be impacted by storm surges.
When so few properties were available the Board members said that showed them it was doubly important to purchase it now even if they didn’t use it immediately.
