LETTER: 30A cyclists are a serious traffic hazard

Published: Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 04:34 PM.

Driving daily along 30A, I see many cyclists enjoying our wonderful bike path.

Unfortunately, there is another group of cyclists who seem to have a stubborn attitude, and who choose instead to ignore the bike path and ride among the motor vehicles on the roadway.

Their numbers seem to be increasing; sometimes I see "packs" of five or more, not always in single file. Often, there can be a line of frustrated drivers backed up behind the cyclists unable to pass.

Sometimes I witness a "white knuckle" moment as a motorist attempts to pass in the face of oncoming traffic while squeezing by the biker with a few feet to spare.

Much of 30A is a narrow, winding roadway without a bike lane. It's totally unsuited for accommodating large numbers of cyclists.

As we all know traffic is heavy at this time of year. There are many large trucks and drivers distracted by hand held devices.

Recently, I was behind a truck that was weaving all over, including onto the grass. Passing, I saw the driver texting away. Any cyclist alongside would have been toast.
