2 bolts of lightning strike 2 houses, cause 2 fires 2 miles apart
A passing thunderstorm Sunday evening resulted in two houses being struck by lightning, sparking attic fires, according to the South Walton Fire District.
The first call of a house struck by lightning came in at 4:45 p.m. at 176 Plantation Way, said South Walton Fire Deputy Chief Sean Hughes. He estimated as much as $60,000 in damage was done, most of which was contained to the attic.
“It did burn a hole in the roof,” he said.
Another call came in about 5:10 p.m. at 42 Pine Tree Way, about 2 miles from the first strike. Hughes said the second fire was less significant, causing about $30,000 in damage.
No one was injured in either fire.
The Destin Fire Department and the Freeport Fire Rescue assisted.
