FREEPORT — Officials are investigating a Wednesday evening fire of an abandoned home on Madison Street.

Capt. Tom Palmer with the Freeport Fire Department said first responders were called to the home just before 6 p.m. after calls came in about smoke in the area.

Palmer said when firefighters arrived the fire was fully involved.

Freeport Fire and Walton County Fire Rescue were on a defensive attack and got the fire under control within 30 minutes, Palmer said.

The home, which has been abandoned for several years, did not have electricity running through it. Palmer said no cause has been determined.

No one was injured in the fire, but the home was a total loss.
