Property tax deadline is March 31
DeFuniak Springs, FL (March 21, 2008) - The Walton County Tax Collector's Office reminds property owners that March 31 is the last day to pay property taxes before incurring a three percent penalty.
"We encourage all Walton County property owners to pay their property taxes by March 31 to avoid that additional 3 percent penalty," said Walton County Tax Collector Rhonda Skipper. "It is important for tax payers to note that we must have the payment in our office by the 31st, payments postmarked by the 31st but not received in the office on that day still incur the penalty."
On April 1, all unpaid accounts are assessed a three percent penalty, plus advertising fees. These properties are then advertised in the paper as required by law and if still unpaid by May 29 are included in an online Tax Certificate Sale on May 30.
During the Tax Certificate Sale, investors bid to purchase the tax certificates issued on certain delinquent properties. The winning bidder on each property immediately pays the owed taxes and gets his or her money back, with interest, once the property owner pays his or her taxes.
Tax payments can be made online at www.waltontaxcollector.com or at the DeFuniak Springs or Santa Rosa Beach offices of the Walton County Tax Collector. Office hours at both locations are Monday through Friday, 8: 00 am to 4:30 pm.
