South Walton steps into spotlight with inaugural Fashion Week

An area typically known for groundbreaking architectural inspiration and the birth of New Urbanism with its towns Seaside and Alys Beach, South Walton will now dip into the fashion world with South Walton Fashion Week on Oct. 11-13 in Grand Boulevard’s Town Center.

While South Walton’s beaches usually conjure images of sunglasses, swimsuits and straw hats all the while beckoning such visiting fashionistas like Katie Holmes, India Hicks, Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Simpson, this scenic area now strives for a place on the fashion map with its inaugural fashion week full of dynamic events.

South Walton Fashion Week will call aspiring designers and models for a fashion extravaganza to benefit the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County while also paying homage to their local designers, as well as spotlighting over 30 upscale boutiques during the event series.

Project Runway’s Mychael Knight joins a panel of other celebrity judges including Cassie McConnell Kelley, author of style blog Womanista.com and wife of Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley and Holly Williams, musician, author of the trendsetting blog TheAfternoonOff.com and owner of Nashville boutique H. Audrey. Heather Roop, an All My Children star, will host the weekend’s festivities. The judges will then select a winner from the SWFW finalists who will showcase their designs on the Emerging Designer Runway Saturday, Oct. 11.

Tickets are $50 in advance and $65 at the door for Friday and Saturday night with a special weekend pass available for $90 by visiting swfw.org.  Advance purchase is recommended as seating is limited.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County, Inc., to fund their Educational Giving Program, which provides much-needed dollars to Walton County teachers for art supplies, books and other supplements in their classroom, along with need-based student art scholarships and college scholarships
