'IN THE ABSENCE OF OTHER LEADERSHIP': Walton County creates new task force to monitor air and water quality

Walton County, today, formed a local task force to address health and public safety as related to the oil spill.
“We have been receiving many calls with questions of water and air quality,” said Sheriff Mike Adkinson. “We have taken these concerns to the state agencies responsible for testing and providing the appropriate data and have been very frustrated. There are many conflicting reports and we have been unable to get clear answers.”
Florida Department of Environmental of Protection (DEP) is responsible for conducting water quality tests and coordinating with Walton County Department of Health to make appropriate decisions regarding issuing health advisories. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for air quality tests. All county agencies including South Walton Fire District, Sheriff’s Office, and Tourist Development Council depend on these organizations depend on these organizations to provide relevant information in order for the public to make appropriate decisions for themselves and their families.
The local task force is made up of representatives from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, South Walton Fire District, Walton County Tourist Development Council, Walton County Department of Health, and EPA. DEP has been strongly encouraged to be involved in this group, however, a representative has not been appointed at this time.
Sheriff Adkinson stated “Health and public safety is our main priority. In the absence of other leadership, we will move forward to protect citizens and visitors of Walton County.”
Oil is a hazardous substance. DO NOT handle or clean any type of oil from the beach. Crude oil, like motor oil, MUST be disposed of properly. Call 850-267-2000 or 1-866-448-5816 immediately if you spot tar balls or oil on any of Walton County’s 26 miles of beaches.
