Yearn for yarn? This store has it
As is often the case, Teri Evans saw a need that no one else was filling and decided to take matters into her own hands. Thus was born Yards N Yarn.
Evans opened the store on April 15 in Freeport Plaza, at the corner of U.S. Highway 331 and 20 and said the community’s response has been very supportive.
“When I got bit by the sewing bug a year or two back, I had to drive to Panama City or Fort Walton to get supplies. Even Walmart is cutting back on its fabric/notions department. So, one day, I just said, ‘hey, I’m opening my own store.’ And I did,” said Evans.
At Yards N Yarn, Evans carries fabric, sewing notions, yarn and more.
“I target the beginning to main-line crotchetier,” said Evans. “We’re not high end.”
Evans may not cater to the high-end crafter, but she said she has just enough tree hugger in her to cause her to embrace natural fabrics and threads.
“We do get in silk bamboo,” she said. “Yarn bamboo is now the big sustainable product and incredibly soft yarn is being made from bamboo.”
In addition to those looking for the latest natural fibers, Evans said they are seeing a lot of quilters in the store who are looking for quilting fabric, canvas, and Freeport cheerleaders coming in wanting fleece in the “Bulldog” colors.
As for herself, Evans describes herself as a novice in using most of the store’s products, with the exception of the crocheting materials.
Evans can be found manning the store during weekends, with her hubby taking over during the week.
“Roger has learned a lot about sewing from being in the store,” Evans says with a chuckle about her retired Navy man. “He’s getting a kick out of this and has gotten quite good at it.”
Yard N Yarns is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
