UPDATE: 1 person killed in crash
PANAMA CITY — A four-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. 98 and Moates Avenue killed one person and closed the highway to westbound traffic Wednesday morning.
Michelle Milton died at a local hospital Wednesday, police reported. Milton was a passenger in the backseat of a black 2008 Suzuki Forenza driven by Dexter Potter. Another passenger, Libby Robinson, was uninjured, authorities said.
“My brother had said someone was at a complete stop, that they should have been in the turning lane, but they weren’t,” Robinson said at the scene.
Ericka Windhelm was traveling behind the four vehicles when the accident happened.
“It hit the car and flipped over,” she said. “It was fast; it happened really fast.”
One of the vehicles overturned, and three of the four were so badly damaged it was unclear which was which.
Michell Ihnat, who was driving a blue 2002 Suzuki Forenza, also was hospitalized, as was Bobbie Marie Ray, who was driving a black 2007 Chevy Trailblazer, according to police.
Potter, Robinson and Ihnat were taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center for treatment and released Wednesday, said spokesman Rod Whiting. James Thorne, who was driving a white 2011 Nissan Murano that appeared to have sustained only minor damage, was not injured.
Police reopened the road around 2 p.m., according to Sgt. Jeff Becker of the Panama City Police Department. Any citations are pending the outcome the investigation, which is ongoing, he said.
