Destin resident Brock Ellis made a new friend while paddle boarding in the Gulf at Sandestin Golf and Beach resort recently.

"I was about to leave the beach when I turned around and spotted a giant shadow in the water," Ellis said. "At first I thought it was a school of dolphins, but I didn't see any fins. That's when I saw a manatee come up for air."

Ellis grabbed his GoPro camera and followed the pod taking pictures and video.

"They didn't seem to mind their spectators," he said. "Toward the end of the video, one of the manatees looks straight into the camera. In my four years working for Sandestin's beach service, I've never seen manatees before this pod spotting."
