Temporary fix to 30A under way

Louis Svehla, public information manager for the Walton County Board of County Commissioners, said plans to fix the road have not necessarily changed, but a temporary fix is underway.

"The Board's motion to replace the area with a bridge still stands," Svehla said. "Instead of keeping that road closed, what has been decided is to fix the location."

While initial estimates concluded that the road may be closed until March 2014, the road-washed area is currently being backfilled with dirt and the county is checking to see if the culvert is in fact safe for cars to drive on.

"If it's not safe, we're looking at placing a temporary bridge over that span so we can open the road up," Svehla said.

Opening up the road will allow for residents, employees and emergency vehicles to once again avoid Highway 98 traffic. While there is no estimated time frame for the temporary fix, Svehla said Walton County administration is trying to solve the problem as quickly as possible.

"We apologize, we're still in delay mode," he said.
