The Friends of the Walton County Coastal Branch Library are paying tribute to Ed and LaDonna Wright for their many years of outstanding service to the library. A commemorative brick with their names has been installed at the front entrance of the library.
The Wrights are stepping down from their post with the Friends. Their fundraising efforts have resulted in huge support for the Coastal Branch due to their skilled management of the Friends of the Walton County Coastal Branch Library Book Sales.
Thanks to the Wrights, the Friends multi-annual book sales have garnered a reputation of being the best in the Panhandle. Ed remembers the original sales being held at the Santa Rosa Beach Post Office.
"There was a simple rack of books on sale for $2.or $3 each," he said.
Since it opened, the book sale has been transferred to the new Coastal Branch Library building. Ed and LaDonna have organized and run these sales ever since. From its meager onset the sales are now widely attended. Ed says, "We are renowned for having tons of books at low prices."
Word has continued to spread.
"At some of the January sales the lines outside the door are so long there has been concern for a fire hazard," LaDonna adds.
At times she has gone to each person in line, counting their books and writing a total on a sticky note. The buyer then presents the sticky note at the desk and pays. That keeps the line moving and calms the crowd concern. The books are sold for 50 cents to $1.
Thousands of dollars have been raised from each sale.
While the community will miss the Wrights' supervision, the book sales will continue with the next being held this May.
The Friends are asking for donations of all your gently used hard and paperback books. All genres are accepted including fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, children's books, CDs and DVDs. All proceeds from the sales will support the Walton County Coastal Branch Library.
