COLUMN: The dark side of vegetarians and why we carnivores should eat them.

I’ve always had problems with 100 percent vegetarians. They always seem so pure, so clean, so worthy of life because they do not eat other animals. One of  my friends, Wendy Anderson, is a vegetarian. She is helping me on a novel, but I’m suspicious of her and plan to eat her right after it’s published.

Oh, I’m well aware how the doctor’s and health experts say to eat more veggies … more veggies and fish, and no meat. But it seems to me God made carnivores on earth for a reason, and maybe in a million years if we meateaters win out, we’ll be raising vegetarians to eat. Seems reasonable to me.

But vegetarians have a much worse history in regards to mankind than we barbecue savages. I was appalled at the recent discovery of the mental attitudes of some of our most famous vegetarians in the eons of human existence. It may stem from the fact that something essential is missing from an all-vegetarian diet. Take a protein that is found in meat and certain fish. Without that particular protein maybe things in the brain don’t function properly, especially mercy.

Rubbish, you veggie eaters say! But the proof is in the pudding or the greens.

The most horrific destroyer of mankind in recorded history was Genghis Khan. He was a 100 percent veggie fellow and the amount of people and cities destroyed is incalculable, millions upon millions according to his biographers. Okay I know that’s way back in time so let’s look a wee bit closer. Maybe his wife was a bad cook, who knows?

The arch villain Adolph Hitler was said to also be a vegetarian. No doubt he was brilliantly ruthless, he even tried to make all Germans go green. His propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels was also a veggie eater and he ended  up poisoning his entire family. Of course, Adolph lost out on forcing Germans to vegetate.

Nazis refused to give up their wienerschnitzel and knockwurst goodies. But, nevertheless, Hitler seems to fall into the veggie club. He didn’t eat meat, and in various recorded events he felt sorry for the animals that were destroyed for human consumption.

How confused can a vegetarian become about the value of life?

Then comes along vegetarian Pol Pot of the Khmer Rouge. Pot slaughtered an estimated 2.5 million of his people or 24 percent of the Cambodian population. Yes, he was a bean and leaf eater. He was determined to make his country agrarian, green only, with no livestock to be consumed.  So the vegetarian killed the non-vegetarians and those who would not conform to his political standards. He killed all intelligencia, only the planters of rice  and vegetable farmers were fit to live. City people were forced to relocate to veggie-raising communes.

And then we have our own home-grown veggie nut, Charles Manson. His group needs no historical introduction. He merely extolled that vegetarianism was next to cleanliness and that their cult drug power would only come from plants that could produce illusionary enlightenment. But of course, like the other off center vegetarians, he had a double standard on mind-expanding drugs that they made in poisonous cooking labs.

And what about Jim Jones, in Jonestown, Guyana, South America? His all-vegetarian cult of 900 really did the ultimate. They forced suicide with homemade Kool-Aid … and veggie fruit lemonade.

While I looked into vegetarian historical accounts, I must admit these wacko infamous leaders are the exception. But the vegetarian leaders do have a problem. They kill in vast numbers and the biggest mass killers in mankind were vegetarians!

The pacifist veggie eaters I know are wonderful folks and, to be honest, I envy their lifestyle. I’m often very disturbed in seeing pictures of those tortures chambers called cluster animal farms where the poor creatures can’t even move. They only have enough room to eat and hardly lay down. Then they are slaughtered. It’s awful and unworthy of our Creator’s gift  of animals to mankind.

This horror gives cause for vegetarianism. Hooray for the green eaters!

I would like to think that intelligence is based on making decisions that are rooted in research and education and rational thinking. Of course we want to be sensitized to injustices but also educated about what's healthy for our bodies. We don't have to be extremist in order to honor a principle and in caring for the planet and its inhabitants, don't we also have a responsibility to care for our bodies as well? For instance, Vitamin B12 is present only in animal sources of food which is one of the reasons why one should assess whether it is healthy to be a strict vegetarian or a vegan. This deficiency can result in less than optimal nervous system function, a tendency toward nervousness, and even less than optimal eye health. So the focus here should be what does your body need in order to thrive and how can we keep ourselves healthy and still honor the planet. This type of harmonious living is attainable.

A Holiday Thought… Aren’t humans amazing Animals? They kill wildlife - birds, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice and foxes by the million in order to protect their domestic animals and their feed. Then they kill domestic animals by the billion and eat them. This in turn kills people by the million, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative - and fatal - - health conditions like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and cancer. So then humans spend billions of dollars torturing and killing millions of more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, few people recognize the absurdity of humans, who kill so easily and violently, and once a year send out cards praying for "Peace on Earth." ~Revised from Old MacDonald’s Factory Farm by C. David Coates~

Meat, yum yum. You forgot another infamous meat eater, Jeffrey Dahmer. I'm sure he loved vegitarians, and he probably preferred them with Gravy.

They kill in vast numbers and the biggest mass killers in mankind were vegetarians! Rameses II, Atilla the Hun, Henry the Eighth, Napoleon Bonaparte, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini, Dwight Eisenhower, Ho Chee Minn, Richard Nixon, Chairman Mao, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George Bush 1 and 2, Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin, Fidel Castro and Robert Mugabe were all meateaters. They have their share of blood on their hands too. I think that most vegetarians, and certainly most vegans, believe in non-violence, compassion and respect for all sentient beings. There are of course, exceptions to every rule.

Rather than repeating demonstrably false claims such as Hitler being a vegetarian -- one of the most persistent but untrue urban myths -- it may be more helpful simply to ask whether we should be killing animals for reasons that are unnecessary. We can be healthy without eating animals' flesh, so why not just live and let live?

You know I saw this article and could not help myself after seeing the stupid title. After reading it I am just shaking my head wondering, was this guy high on something when he wrote this? Maybe he has been picked on all his life for how fat he is, or his clothing choices? What ever his problem is, I suggest he try hanging out with people who although they base thier diet on Plant life, are normal peace loving humans. Oh, and try a piece of fruit, it might sweeten your dispositon.

Although I have not done all of the research for the other heinously cruel people mentioned in this article we know that Hitler was not a vegetarian. He said publicly that he was because they were trying to get people to ration in Nazi Germany. We have many accounts that showed his violence toward animals included the nonhuman kind in his diet. You can also see his dog Blondie cower from him in fear when he comes by in footage. Makes you wonder about that relationship too. We should also consider how we are wasting food by feeding plants to artificially inseminated animals and then eating those animals when we could feed the starving folks around the world several times over if we were not this wasteful. Not to mention the water waste. I think it is best that we look at our actions and not be so worried about dietary claims of people we do not know. What we do know is that eating meat dairy and eggs is violent and unnecessary cruelty. Every time we sit down to eat we make a choice to support cruelty or not. ChooseVeg dot com.

Should Walton County lower the speed limit on 30A to 35 mph?
Yes. We need to keep the speed limit low so everyone can enjoy the view.
