CONGRATULATING GRADS: Ann Haigh, Environmental Protection and Jack Abbot, Fire Commissioner

South Walton Fire District lifeguards take to the beach

A graduation ceremony at Ed Walline beach access area on March 6 recognized more than 20 new and returning lifeguards completing the annual two-week training academy. The lifeguards reported to their towers at eight beach access points the following day.

The annual training academy included 80 hours of medical training, surf rescue techniques, beach and water surveillance techniques, strength and stamina conditioning, Fire District policy and procedures and communications.

"Training at this time of year in the Gulf is particularly challenging due to the cold water and air temperatures," said Gary Wise, Beach Safety Director. "I am very impressed with the dedication and commitment that the guards have demonstrated during this year's training."

All graduating guards received a certificate, a whistle, and a hearty round of applause from attending local government officials, family and friends. TDC Director Sonny Mares, a representative of County Commissioner Cecelia Jones' office, and numerous members of the SWFD were on hand to congratulate the class members.

 GOT GUARDS? THESE BEACHES DO:

From March 8 through September, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., lifeguards are present at eight regional beach accesses: Inlet Beach, Santa Clara, Van Ness Butler Jr., Blue Mountain, Gulf View Heights, Ed Walline, Dune Allen and Miramar Beach.
