Wrestlers to throw down in South Walton Border Wars

The South Walton Border Wars will take to the wrestling mats at 2 p.m., Nov. 15 at South Walton High School .

Nineteen Florida high schools will be in attendance, most from the north Florida region. In addition to South Walton, Niceville, Fort Walton Beach , Choctaw and Rocky Bayou Christian will compete.

Louisiana will bring three teams featuring St. Paul 's from Covington and East Ascension and Brusly from Baton Rouge Louisiana will feature three state champions including Trevor Schermer from Brusly, a three-time state champion who will be chasing his fourth consecutive state championship this year. Thirteen Louisiana wrestlers are ranked preseason top 10 including No. 1 ranked 106-pound Alex Betteridge and heavyweight Connor Karwath from East Ascension.  St Paul 's is a perennial powerhouse in Louisiana wrestling and will bring a strong contingent led by No. 2 ranked Tanner LeBlanc at 160 pounds.

Florida brings two of its own state champions in Tristan Sommer from Lincoln High School in Tallahassee and Colten Jackson from the Villages High School in central Florida

South Walton will not have its full contingent of wrestlers because of the football playoffs but will be led by returning district champion, regional runner-up and state qualifier, junior Cody Pickren.  Cody begins the season ranked seventh in the state at 145 pounds.  He is joined by his brother, freshman William Pickren who begins his high school wrestling career ranked sixth in the state at 106 pounds.  Other wrestlers to watch for South Walton are returning sophomores Alex Cao and Michael Infinger.

The tournament continues on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the championship brackets featuring the top eight wrestlers in each weight class.
