James LeRoy Waters

James LeRoy Waters, 88, passed away at home on Good Friday, March 29, 2013. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and most of his life resided in Garfield Heights, Ohio.

As a young man he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in World War II and after the war married Pauline Weiler in 1947. Jim was employed by the Garfield Heights Fire Department where he eventually became captain and chief of fire prevention. Upon retirement from the fire department he became safety director for the city of Garfield Heights and finally safety and security director for Marymount Hospital.

In 1994 he retired and moved to Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. Jim was an avid sportsman who enjoyed whitewater and flat water kayaking, canoeing, cross country skiing, pheasant/squirrel hunting, boating and fly fishing. He also enjoyed square dancing, photography, lapidary and was involved with many organizations such as scouting, the Masonic order and volunteered at the Sacred Heart Hospital.

Jim was a friend to all, a man who loved life, a patriot and devoted to his wife and family. He will be missed by many.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Pauline Waters; daughter, Nancy Freeman and her husband, Don Freeman; granddaughters, Jamie Lamkin and her husband, Greg Lamkin, and Stephanie Freeman; and great-grandchildren, Benjamin Lamkin, Morgan Lamkin and Crawford Korthals.
