Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is gearing up for its biggest event of the year — the 28th annual Sandestin Triathlon. Scheduled for August 23, the event includes 24.5 miles of rigorous exercise, and draws hundreds of people.

“We had more than 800 participants last year,” said Katie Tyler, recreation coordinator for Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. “Our goal for the next few years is to reach 1,000 participants, which I know we can do. This is the perfect place for a triathlon.”

The triathlon course starts with a half-mile swim in the Gulf of Mexico , followed by a 20-mile bike ride along the flat scenic coastline, and ends with a 4-mile run beachside and bayside through the Sandestin Resort.

“Our triathlon course is one of the best,” Tyler said. “That’s the luxury of having it on a resort like Sandestin — it’s scenic and well-groomed, and has a lot of shade. Plus you get to swim in the beautiful Gulf of Mexico . You just can’t beat it.”

On top of that, part of your registration fee goes to a great cause.

Each year, the Sandestin Resort donates part of the proceeds, to the Sacred Heart Foundation — $20,000 to be exact.

“Although the location is a big selling point, we are also giving back,” Tyler said. “The Sacred Heart Foundation has such a great mission and we are happy that we can help in some small way.”
