Big Fish Bike Rentals: ‘the only way to see 30A’

When Memphis-natives Nicole and Kevin McKee took a vacation to Seagrove — it was love at first sight. So in 2000, they packed up their belongings and moved to 30A in hopes to make a home for their future family. And now, with three kids in tow, they’re celebrating their 14th season as business owners of Big Fish Bike Rentals, “the only way to see 30A.”
“I’ve always wanted to open a business,” Kevin said. “And when we moved down here, there weren’t a lot of independent bike shops open — the bike path along 30A wasn’t even finished. So we had the idea of starting a business and offering a delivery service, which no one else was doing.”
The McKees started Big Fish Bike Rentals with 50 bikes and a couple of storage units that doubled as their shop, office and storage. They soon landed a contract with Beach Rentals of South Walton to be their sole bike provider, which gave them the instant business they needed. And after years of building an inventory and securing a loyal customer base, Kevin engineered a customized trailer to accommodate his growing delivery business.
“I designed a trailer for deliveries that was completely different than anything available,” he said. “Since I was starting out of a storage unit, I had to deliver, and had to minimize the number of trips back and forth. A truck bed delivery just wouldn't do. Our original design would allow us to carry 28 bikes on the trailer. And after subsequent improvements on that original design, we created one that carries up to 32 bikes. We now have 5 trucks and 5 trailers running daily during the in-season.”
Big Fish offers free drop-off and pick-up, along with free helmets, baskets and locks — all included in rental fees. And if you reserve 10 days in advance, you also receive a 10-percent discount. Big Fish prides itself on offering a wide arrange of bikes they carry — beach cruisers, mountain bikes, customized BMX bikes, and lots of different colors. And, along with high-quality bicycles, the McKees understand the importance of high-quality customer service.
“I would like to think that I have been blessed with a decent personality that brings my customers back every year,” Kevin expresses on their website. “You can definitely tell the people that fake it when you meet them. I try to treat my customers exactly how I treat my family and friends. In fact, over the years I have become good friends with a number of customers. I have met many wonderful people throughout the years and I'm really thankful to have a business that attracts good people.”
So as Big Fish Bike Rentals flourished, the McKees decided to venture into new business opportunities — opening Donut Hut down the street in 2013, and buying Cocoon’s Deli where they recently relocated Big Fish. Now with three businesses and three growing kids, Kevin and Nicole said they couldn’t be happier with their decision to start a life and a family in the beautiful area of Seagrove.
