Safe travels to all — see you next year

Did you have fun? If you didn’t, it wasn’t our fault. Our club’s mantra is “Come join the fun.” Eighteen hundred plus snowbirds accepted that challenge and filled the winter months here on the Emerald Coast with hours of joy, frivolity, laughs and every other form of good times with their fellow escapees from the frozen environs of the north country. “We love this place; it’s like being in college without classes.”

The season is winding down but there is time left to finish off the season with some memories. The fifth annual President’s Cup golf tournament was held at the Pines golf course in Fort Walton Beach Feb. 24.The USA defeated Canada with an average team score of 65 to Canada’s 68 to close the gap to 3 to 2. Watch out next year, the USA is going for the three-peat.

The Ladies Charity Scramble was held the same day at the same course and Connie Demar, Sandy Horgan, Doreen Davis and Cheryl Kelly shot a 77 to lead the ladies division. Thirty-two 4-person teams participated in these two events and raised more than $1,200 for the Walton County Women’s Shelter. Special thanks to Mike Callan and his wife for coordinating this event, a job well done. Also, thanks to Jeanette Diggins and the prize committee for providing door prizes and Liam Branagan and the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort for their generous support of this charitable event.

The Book Discussion group will meet for the final time on Thursday, March 6, to discuss “419” by Will Ferguson. The discussion will be led by Ann Neale. They have had an attendance of around 30 each month, which is a lot for a book discussion, but snowbirds are polite and it works out.

The Creative Writers Workshop selected Louise Bottrell's story, “A Promise Fulfilled,” as the best story of the 2014 workshop. You can read the story on the club’s website on the Creative Writing page.

The officers for Walton County Snowbirds for next year, 2014-2015, were unanimously approved at the Feb. 26 general meeting at the Village Baptist Church.  Here is the board:
