Snowbird season officially arrives

Published: Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 14:36 PM.

As the new year of 2014 arrived in the land of the emerald green waters and sugar white beaches, so did a large flock of Walton County Snowbirds. Yes, it’s true, snowbird season has officially arrived.

This new fleet of snowbirds will need to head on over to see Joan Dougall and her dependable volunteers to get registered. That will take place Jan. 6, and continue every Monday through Feb. 10 at Faith Assembly Fellowship Hall, 306 South Geronimo in Miramar Beach. It begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. and stay until 10:30 a.m.  Be prepared to pay your $9 fee and enjoy all the club offerings for the whole season.

More than 30 activities are on the schedule and most begin this week. Foremost among them is the general meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Destin Life Center Building of the Destin United Methodist Church, 200 Beach Drive. You might plan on heading over early in order to give yourself time to visit vendor tables prior to the start of the meeting. Vendors are happy to discuss specials that are offered for snowbirds, so this is your opportunity to be an informed winter guest.

Tom Rajnovich and Paul Tomlinson wanted everyone to be aware that the Tuesday and Thursday Golf Leagues will be getting underway starting Jan. 7 and 9 respectively at the Golf Garden Executive Course in Destin. These leagues will run for eight weeks with a cost of $100 per golfer, which includes prize money. All league players, who must be a registered member of the Walton County Snowbird Club, are given a handicap and prize money is awarded each week accordingly. If you would prefer to just be a substitute player, that can be arranged. Contacts are tomraj@cabletv.on.ca for Tuesday and paulbarbtomlinson@gmail.com for Thursday. As always, additional information can be obtained at the Walton County Snowbird website.

There is no limit on the tickets you can purchase for the Walton County Snowbird Scholarship Raffle. For many years, the snowbirds have awarded a $1,000 scholarship to two deserving senior class members of South Walton High School who otherwise would be unable to continue their education. The winner of the raffle, which will take place at the Feb. 12 general meeting, will be pleased to accept a beautiful gift basket valued at more than $350. It is loaded with certificates for local restaurants, rounds of golf, area stores, entertainment venues, and more. You do not need to be present to win. Tickets will be available at all registrations and general meetings until the drawing.
