Before coaches, family and teammates, Freeport’s Shannon “Junior” Carswell signed a full-ride scholarship to play football with the University of Southern Mississippi Wednesday afternoon at Freeport High School.
Carswell, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 300 pounds, will play defensive line for Southern Miss.
“I’m very excited,” said a shy Carswell.
Although Carswell is a young man of few words, he made his presence known on the gridiron.
From 2015 to 2017, Carswell has racked up 154 tackles, 18 for losses; seven sacks; two interceptions; scored four touchdowns; and blocked six kicks.
“He’s just such a good kid,” said Freeport football coach Shaun Arntz. “He’s a good Christian kid. He’s got great character and a great work ethic. At the end of the day, he’s just a good all around person.
“And he’s very deserving of this opportunity and he’s going to make the most of it,” Arntz said.
