Mary Kate Myrick, Katie O'Neal and Megan O'Neal combined for 67 points to lead the Freeport Bulldogs in 77-45 win over the South Walton Seahawks Tuesday night in girls' varsity basketball action in Freeport.
Myrick and Katie each scored 25 points, while Megan picked up the other 17 points.
"We played so hard on defense then the offense got to cranking a little bit," Freeport Coach Mike Myrick said outside the locker room following the game. "We're going to shoot a lot of threes, that's going to be our style. We're going to live and die by it."
Not only did they shoot the 3-point shot, but they made it 13 times. Mary Kate Myrick made six 3s, Megan hit four, and Katie tossed in three.
"We've got three or four that can shoot it out there and I feel comfortable with them shooting," Myrick said.
"They play hard, and they are fun to watch," he added.
However, Coach Kevin Craig of the defending Class 1A State Championship Seahawks said Wednesday morning after the game, "We've got a long way to go.
"We played like a team out of sync … not enough practice time," he said. Three of his starters just wrapped up their volleyball season Saturday, and haven't had much practice time.
"It's going to be a rough November," Craig said.
And the rough ride started Tuesday night when they were handily beaten by the Bulldogs.
South Walton's Mckenzie Perot drew first blood with a jumper, but then Freeport's Mary Kate Myrick sank back-to-back 3s followed by a layup on a turnover to give the 'Dogs an 8-2 lead. By the end of the period, Freeport's Myrick had nailed a couple more 3s and the Bulldogs led 17-15.
At the start of the second quarter, South Walton evened the score on a basket from Ashlyn Sachenbacher. But then the Bulldogs went on a 12-point scoring spree with Katie O'Neal driving the lane for three baskets, plus drilling a 3-pointer. Megan O'Neal finished up the run with a trey and a put-back basket for a 31-17 advantage.
Casey Perot, who finished the night with 15 points, hit a basket for the Seahawks after an almost 5 minute drought.
Freeport's Katie Decker hit a couple of inside shots and the Bulldogs led 35-22 at the half.
In the third quarter, Freeport continued to bomb away from the outside with both the O'Neal's hitting a pair of 3s while Myrick tossed in another. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 58-34.
In the fourth, Freeport put up 10 consecutive points leaving the Seahawks behind 70-37. In the last three minutes of play, South Walton scored eight points, while the Bulldogs hit for seven.
"It's easy to coach when you have those that can score," said Myrick. "I'm not going to take no credit for it, they can score."
Up next for the Bulldogs is a 7:15 p.m. game Monday at Ponce de Leon, while the Seahawks host the Niceville Eagles at 6:15 Tuesday.
