Lady basketballers vanquish Vikings for first time

The District 4 Class 1-A tournament tips off Tuesday at South Walton High School with the championship game scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 2. Teams making up District 4 include Liberty County, Franklin County, West Gadsden, Port St. Joe, Bozeman, Blountstown and South Walton.

The Seahawks lead the district and drew a bye in the first round. South Walton will play the winner of the Liberty vs. Franklin game at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 1.

As for Tuesday's game against Fort Walton Beach, Craig said, "I'm was pleased with our competitiveness and toughness. They just played basketball.

"Kati Trejo had a great second half," Craig continued. Trejo was high-point player for the game with 18 points, 16 coming in the second half. "And Morgan (Kennedy) and Tayler (Menard) played them with no fear."

To start South Walton got on the board first with a pair of free throws from Menard. Mercedez Claybrone answered with a basket to tie the game. The scoring went back and forth, with the Seahawks trying to take it inside, drawing foul after foul and making six of eight tries. Fort Walton Beach led 11-9 at the buzzer.

In the second quarter, the Seahawks continued to show no fear driving through the lane and picking up fouls. Kennedy and Menard forced the issue picking up three fouls. Fort Walton hit the inside shot to go up 17-14. In the last three minutes, South Walton's Trejo sank a little jumper, then Eve Heffron took it inside for an 18-17 lead. Fort Walton's Quay McNabb put up a quick layup, then South Walton finished the half with a side shot from Mackenzie Perot and a 20-19 advantage.

In the third quarter, the lead swapped hands five times before ending in a 32-32 tie. Menard scored six points, Casey Perot put up four points and Trejo two.
