Full of Graceville: Seahawk boys sink

Although South Walton’s Shane Seeger knocked down 22 points, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Graceville Tigers in varsity basketball action Friday night as the Seahawks lost 66-54 in a District 2 Class 2A contest.

“I thought we game-planned them good,” said South Walton Coach John Davies. “We just missed too many layups and free throws.”

The Seahawks missed 18 from the line.

“You can’t leave those kind of things on the floor when you’re playing the No. 1 team in the district.”

Nevertheless, Davies said, “I was proud of how we stood our ground.”

Graceville started the scoring with an inside basket. South Walton came back with two baskets, a tip-in by Seeger and a driving layup by Dylan Smith. Graceville’s Jackie Miles popped a 3-pointer and Smith nailed two free throws for what would be the Seahawks last lead of the game.

At that point, Graceville drilled a couple 3-pointers in a nine point run for a 14-6 lead. South Walton closed it back down to a three-point game on layups from Seeger and Smith. Graceville put an offensive rebound back for two points and a 16-11 lead at the buzzer.

In the second quarter, Graceville outscored the Seahawks 22-17 with Cameron Dozier leading the effort with eight points. Seeger and Smith each scored six points for the Seahawks.

South Walton gained a little ground on the Tigers in the third, outscoring them 12-11. Again, Seeger and Smith each scored six points on layups.

Early in the fourth quarter, South Walton came within seven points of catching the Tigers on a couple of free throws. However, Graceville went on an 11-point scoring spree to widen the gap. The Tigers outscored the Seahawks 17-14 for the period.

For the game, South Walton was 17 of 35 from the free-throw line while Graceville was eight of 18.

Seeger scored 22, while Smith hit for 15 points. Shafer Martin scored six points, and Chad Bryant hit for three.

Graceville was led by Cameron Dozier with 22 points. Miles scored 12 points.

Up next for South Walton is a 7:30 p.m. game Thursday at Vernon and a 7 p.m. game Friday at Graceville.
