South Walton Seahawks fall in final innings

After leading for three innings, the South Walton Seahawks were overpowered by the Baker Gators for a 5-3 loss in girl’s varsity softball action in Santa Rosa Beach Monday evening.

At the end of four innings, South Walton led 3-1 having scored one run in the first on a hit from Tessa Hendrix and two in the third on back-to-back singles from Lea Ellison, Megan Ellison and Hendrix.

In the top of the fifth, Baker's Tori Foster clobbered the first pitch for a shot over the left centerfield fence. The next Gator walked then Mykala McCranie singled to left center. The next batter popped up to shortstop Brittany Kline for an out. Jenna Stevenson drew a walk to load the bases. South Walton's pitcher Megan Ellison hit the next batter to force in a run and tie the game at 3-3. Emily Stewart singled in a run for the go ahead, then another run was forced in on a walk for a 5-3 lead.

The Seahawks got runners on in the three times at bat, but couldn't get them home.

Top batter for South Walton were Hendrix with two hits, and Kline, Lea Ellison and Megan Ellison each with one.

McCranie had two hits for Baker.

Up next for South Walton, 2-3, is a 4 p.m. game Thursday at home against West Gadsden.
