Team managers keep the Seahawks soaring.
Behind every good team is a good team manager.
The South Walton High School girl’s basketball team is lucky… they have four.
The fab four consists of freshmen Leanna Britt, Haven Richter, Madison Hill and senior Drew Kratzer.
The team managers are responsible for taping games, keeping accurate records in the scorebooks, setting up the balls and water for the team, and carrying equipment.
“You gotta have kids like this,” said head coach Kevin Craig. “They are an integral part of your school’s program.”
Craig said his team managers come to almost every game and are willing to make sacrifices for the success of the team.
Kratzer, 18, is the veteran on the squad.
“I had a class with coach Craig in my freshman year,” Kratzer said, “and he was looking for team managers. Since I had just moved here from Alabama and didn’t know anybody I thought I would give it a try.”
Almost four years later, Kratzer is still coach Craig’s “right hand man.”
“I have probably fired him at least seven times since he has been with me,” Craig said jokingly.
In addition to being part of the team, all team manager earn community service hours for their efforts.
Fourteen-year-old Madison Hill just moved to Walton County from Chicago and loves the opportunities presented by being a team manager.
While Hill is enjoying being one of the team managers, she is not sure if she is going to do it past this season.
“I am going to be taking honors classes,” she said. “There is going to be a lot more homework, so I don’t know if I am going to have time.”
For her part, Haven Richter, 14, can’t wait to be a team manager again next year.
“I have a lot of fun doing this,” Richter said. “I get to help out with the team and hang out with my friends.”
Richter said that being a team manager has definitely helped her become more “outgoing and sociable.”
“I really like the girls on the team, they make it a lot of fun because they are really nice to us.”
Coach Craig said the girls are still kind of learning as they go, but they are catching on quickly.
Leanna Britt, 14, couldn’t agree with Craig more.
“One of the hardest parts so far has been trying to remember everything we need to do,” Britt said, “but I’m getting better.”
While the South Walton team managers may do most of their work behind the scenes, Craig never lets them go unappreciated.
“You just can’t say enough about these kids,” he said. “They are like my right hand. If I forget something, they are the first to let me know.”
