I would like to first thank the newspaper for posting a question for me on their social media site on Facebook. We have plans to visit your great city, but struggled with finding beachfront property that was pet friendly. Your readers were fantastic. Granted nothing panned out, but what a great response from your readers!
I would now like to take some time to address your recent changes to rules regarding pets on the beach. We have been informed by our resort that you are no longer allowed to walk your dog on the beaches of Walton County.
We contacted the Walton County clerk’s office for more information and were informed that we may only purchase a permit if we own land in Walton County, or have a one-year lease. I then went and did some research, thanks again to the Destin Log, on the new ordinance. Commissioner Meadows states in an article posted on Jan. 17 that “We’ve got this golden goose and we’ve got to have rules and we’ve got to enforce them.”
I don’t believe that any rules would be broken if the resorts would be held accountable for their guests. Guest must pay a deposit to the resorts prior to arrival. Another fee could be charged once the documentation was provided to the resort (i.e. license and vaccinations from a vet). Commissioner Meadows also states that the recession has hurt their county. If I understand the county’s web site correctly, homeowners pay a fee of $40 for a yearly permit. I think if the county would allow the resorts to charge the same fee for their visit, that this would bring added revenue for the county.
Thank you for your time.
