Local artist Donna Burgess has been active on the local and national art scene for more than two decades. She recently reached out to friends, Joe and Lea Capers, owners of Insurance Zone, regarding a cause supporting parents who protect their children from abuse and abusive situations.

Knowing that this was a personal cause for the Capers, Burgess decided to create a unique piece of art, not only supporting her friends, but also the cause as well. She recently unveiled, “The Embrace,” at the annual Insurance Zone After Hours event Aug. 15 at Rum Runners.

The art campaign will help raise dollars to support one mother’s immediate needs to help and protect her child, with the hope of assisting other parents who have found their children in abusive situations and are looking for legal and personal ways to support those children in the fight against abuse.

The National Center for Victims of Crime reports one in five girls, and one in 20 boys, is a victim of child sexual abuse. The US Department of Health and Human Services Children’s Bureau also reports that one report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds.

“Before our personal involvement with my daughter and granddaughter’s struggles, we were not aware of the prevalence of these crimes and court decisions, and we are overwhelmed with the number of close friends that have experienced, or are experiencing, related situations,” said Joe Capers.  “We are happy to underwrite this project as one hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the campaign.”

For those who contribute $50 or more, they will receive a color poster of The Embrace. For those that contribute $250 or more to the campaign, they will receive a limited edition artist proof.  All contributions are appreciated.  For more info, email joe@ins-zone.com, find us on Facebook, call the Insurance Zone office at 850-424-6979, or visit 495 Grand Boulevard to see the original work.
