What do you get when 14 men on bikes embark on a 500-mile journey over five days for a good cause? Sixty-five thousand dollars for Wings Cancer Foundation.

The men started the 500-mile challenge in their hometown of Memphis and rode through Tupelo, Miss., Tuscaloosa, Selma, and Andalusia, Ala., and ended in Rosemary Beach.

According to Sarah Blackburn, development manager for Wings, this year was a tough one for the riders, but it was not in vain.

“They’ve had bad weather, traffic, spokes break off,” said Blackburn, who added that the money raised will be put toward the Memphis-based nonprofit’s wellness and nutrition program, which bears an annual price tag of $54,000.

“They were collecting money along the way … Now, that program is paid for,” she said.

This is the second year for the ride, which last year included nine riders who raised about $25,000 for Wings, which provides free emotional and nutritional support for those suffering with — and survivors of — cancer.
