David Smith and James Ferguson, members of Troop 712 in Santa Rosa Beach, were South Walton’s first Scouts to become Eagle Scouts.


30 years ago — 1984

The state Department of Environmental Regulation ordered Walton County to close the Blue Mountain Beach landfill.


25 years ago — 1989

A group of citizens formed the South Walton Airport Task Force to oppose the proposed Walton County airport because of environmental issues.

The state Department of Transportation announced that plans for widening a stretch of U.S. 98 near Sandestin would be delayed about two years due to lack of funds.


20 years ago — 1994

Many property owners in the South Walton Fire District were set to receive discounts on their property insurance premiums because of the district’s improved protection class rating.

Freeport City Council members considered expanding the city’s water system into surrounding areas.

A new Destin Bank branch opened in the Delchamps store in South Walton.

Destin developer Rick Rushing’s latest project was a 63-unit subdivision in south Walton County in Seagrove Beach.


10 years ago — 2004

The residential Walton Way project was approved by the Board of County Commissioners despite protests from surrounding homeowners that proper notice of the project was not given.

The Walton County Animal Control Ordinance requires dogs on the beach to have permits and permits can only be obtained by permanent residents or property owners.
