Cheveu is hair in French, said Shellie Arriaga, It is also the name of Arriaga's new salon and spa located in Seacrest Village.
The Arriagas have been sought out and known throughout the area and beyond for more than a decade for their fine handcrafted turquoise and pearl-on-leather jewelry.
Located just outside Rosemary Beach, the Arriagas were looking to expand beyond their jewelry when someone suggested the area needed a salon and spa.
"I have always loved skin care, and makeup," said Shellie, "and I worked with skin care at Merle Norman when I was in my 20s."
So, returning to work with it again seemed only natural.
The hair salon section of Cheveu has been open for more than a month, with the offering of massages and skin care following.
Cheveu currently has one hair stylist, Ericka Calamia, but has room for four.
"I am looking for the right people to add but I am being picky," said Arriaga. "When I refer one of my jewelry customers to my salon, I must make sure they won't be disappointed."
The spa offers a choice of six different massage therapists, including one specializing in Ashiatsu barefoot massage, and three skin estheticians, one of which also does nails.
Cheveu also offers ashi and deep tissue massages, organic skin care lines such as the marine-based Phytomer, organic nail polish, Goldwell color, and Moroccan oil products for the hair.
In addition, clients will receive a full hour massage instead of the usual 50 minutes offered by competitors.
"We are full service and customer service is No. 1," said Arriaga. "I will travel around to bring back the latest products, offer new treatments and our people will undergo continuous training."
Cheveu's spa equipment is top of the line recliners that are ergonomically correct, she said.
The boutique establishment at Seacrest Village will focus on locals, said Arriaga, and offers $10 off each treatment for referrals.
"We began thinking of expanding at the end of 2012," she said. "I wanted to create jobs, and we have the potential for 16 staff and independent contractors."
During the off season, Cheveu is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 231-0920 for an appointment.
30A Cheveu Salon & Spa is located at 10343 E. County Road 30A in Seacrest located next door to Arriaga Pearls.
It began with jewelry
Shellie grew up in Destin and met Richard Arriaga, her creative jewelry-making husband in Texas. After their son was born, she wanted to move back to this area to raise their son. They opened their first jewelry store here at Uptown Grayton in 2001, then moved to Blue Mountain next to Justin Gaffrey studio, then to Seacrest three years ago. Richard Arriaga has been making jewelry now for 25 years, and the jewelry line expanded last year when a store in Los Angeles began selling their jewelry.
