As a local of South Walton, each year my family joins in Seagrove for the July Fourth parade. While my son waves at the participants and gathers candy in his bucket, I think of the true significance of the day.

I think of all the freedoms Americans enjoy and sometimes take for granted.

For example, I can express my opinion in the local media. Or I can sit on the beach and practice Falun Gong. Both of these actions are restricted in China.

Falun Gong is a spiritual discipline rooted in ancient Chinese culture. It incorporates 5 gentle exercises and teaches the principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance.

In 1999, the Chinese Communist Party launched an unlawful, nationwide campaign designed to eliminate Falun Gong. People in China are persecuted for what others in over 70 countries practice freely.

This brings us to July 20. This year, it marked the 15th anniversary of the persecution of Falun Gong in China.

As some estimates place the number of practitioners between 70 million and 100 million, Falun Gong’s resistance is one of the largest peaceful civil disobedience efforts in history, lasting even longer in China than the Cultural Revolution.

July 20 presents Americans an opportunity to take a stance against perhaps the greatest human rights atrocity in the world today. I hope reading this inspires you to embrace American values by letting your upright voice on this issue be heard.
