Dr. Steve Henry reported to the Destin Chamber of Commerce that the relatively isolated Destin/Santa Rosa Beach area might qualify for federal health care funds.

An after-school day care program, a weather station and a new kindergarten class highlighted expanded programs as Bay Elementary School started the new school year.

Another Conservation and Recreational Lands project for Walton County received the state’s blessing as the government intended to acquie the northern portion of Lake Powell to preserve the water body’s natural buffer zone.


10 years ago — 2004

Carl Cotton’s Produce stand closes for good as 73-year-old Cotton “goes fishing.”

The start date for Destin and Walton County’s beach restoration project was delayed at least a year because of legal actions from property owners who opposed the work.

Vandals set fire to Cessna Park restroom.

Regional Utilities and the Inlet Beach Water System reached a tentative agreement regarding who would provide sewer in the Inlet Beach area.

St. Rita Catholic Church opened its doors to 19 preschoolers who became the first students to attend the new St. Rita Preschool in South Walton.
