Fishing in his fourth-ever Destin Fishing Rodeo, Capt. Richard Rogers of the Southern Charm clinched the captain’s award in the private under 25 division.

“It was a very great surprise,” said Rogers who didn’t know he had won until the awards banquet Saturday evening at AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar.

Rogers said he started fishing the rodeo in 2009 and that first year he and his wife Lee won two of the Shark Saturday’s.

“My wife is just as passionate about it as I am,” Rogers said of fishing the rodeo.

In 2010 and 2011 the Rogers won again with sharks.

“We had two or three kings but they didn’t hold” in 2012. However, they did get jaws to hold in the form of a 255-pound tiger shark.

In 2011 they again won on the last Saturday of the month with a 103.4-pound shark.

This year the Southern Charm won with a pair of sharks, a 187.4-pounder and an 83.6-pounder. But helping to clinch the win was an 8.2-pound bonito.

“We usually go after king mackerel early, because they are hard to find later on,” he said. But again their best shot of getting on the board was in the shark division.

“We didn’t concentrate on the sharks until the last few weeks,” he said. And it paid off. They won $250 for each shark, plus trophies.
