Gulf Coast’s men’s and women’s basketball teams each started the regular season with victories Friday night, with the men defeating Lamar State 87-74 at Pensacola and the Lady Commodores topping Central Florida 82-61 in Gainesville.

Davaris McGowens led the Commodores with 17 points and 10 rebounds on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line, while Donovan Franklin added 15 points, Cobe Goosby 14, and Rodney Ross 13. Franklin also had six assists and Ross seven rebounds.

Gulf Coast led 45-31 at halftime. The Commodores shot 57 percent from the field and converted 8-of-15 from the 3-point line.

The Lady Commodores got an impressive debut from 6-foot-3 freshman Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau, who tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Gulf Coast in both categories.

Chipley alum Amanda Paschal added 10 points in her first college game, as did Shaterrika O’Neal. Kristina King and Raven Fox each had nine points, and Maria Morales Castro scored eight points.

The Lady Commodores will play Santa Fe today in Gainesville, while the Gulf Coast men take on South Georgia Tech today in Pensacola.
