Counterfeit $20 dollar bills DeFuniak Springs Police Chief Mark Weeks praised as “good forgeries” weren’t good enough to get past a Walmart cashier.
Christopher Lee Sawyer, 38, and Tracey Marie Matthews, 26, now stand charged with possession of counterfeit bills and possession of tools for counterfeiting.
City police were called to Walmart at 1:30 p.m., Monday. The fake bills they discovered there led to an investigation that included the United States Secret Service.
“A vehicle and motel room was discovered to be the storage location and manufacturing point” for a rather complex counterfeiting operation, a news release said, and more than 30 sheets of phony $20’s were recovered.
“These are good forgeries, Weeks said. “The paper is similar and many of the features resemble a genuine bill.”
