Driver involved in the single-vehicle crash did not possess a valid driver's license.
WALTON COUNTY — A driver ejected from his overturning vehicle is in serious condition after a single-vehicle crash at 11:15 a.m. Monday on State Road 20 near Cowford Road.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol news release, 27-year-old Edgar Leonel Contreras of Santa Rosa Beach was traveling west on S.R. 20 when he lost control of his 2005 Chevrolet Express and traveled onto the shoulder of the roadway. FHP noted at that point, Contreras overcorrected causing the van to rotate counter-clockwise and begin flipping.
The van overturned several times and eventually came to a final rest on its roof on the westbound shoulder of S.R. 20. Contreras was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected into a nearby wood line. He was listed in serious condition Monday afternoon at Bay Medical Center in Panama City.
A passenger in the vehicle, 65-year-old Quirino A. Cavazos of Santa Rosa Beach, was wearing a seat belt and was removed from the heavily damaged van with just minor injuries, the release said. Cavazos was treated and released from Bay Medical.
Contreras was charged with not possessing a valid driver's licence and for failure to maintain a single lane of travel, according to FHP.
