DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — A man was arrested on drug charges after deputies found him passed out behind the wheel of a car with a syringe in his lap and a baggie in his hand.

A deputy was looking in the area of Ponderosa Boulevard and Passion Flower Street for a suspicious vehicle on March 2 when he saw the man asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle, which was parked on the roadway shoulder, according to a Walton County Sheriff’s Office arrest report. The deputy approached the man and noticed a syringe in his lap and a plastic bag gripped by his right hand.

The deputy woke the 34-year-old homeless man up and he discarded the baggie onto the driver’s side floorboard. The deputy asked him what was in the plastic bag, and he said it was “salt.”

The deputy believed the substance was methamphetamines, based on his training and experience. The man was arrested for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of paraphernalia.
